I love to cook! I love to take a recipe and play around with it until I get it just the way I like it. There is great satisfaction in converting a recipe to make it healthier and more organic and natural. As a matter of fact, as I sit here writing this I have granola in the oven and bread raising on the counter..... ya, I am one of those weird people that grinds my own wheat and makes most of my own food. I also have a weird obsession for buying cookbooks. I don't collect many things, but that is one collection that I have. That's why this cookbook is SO perfect for me: and no, you don't have to grind your own wheat to use it.
I think one of the most important things in food is keeping as natural in your ingredients as possible. The more you stay away from processed foods the better. The author of The Homemade Pantry, Alana Chernila, has the same philosophy as I do when it comes to this. I would rather have a recipe using whole, natural ingredients, over something "healthy" that is packed full of ingredients I can't even read.
Here is another thought that I have when it comes to making your own food. We have become so busy in our daily lives that we don't take time to slow down any more. We have so many modern conveniences to make our lives easier, but what they have done is allow us to be even busier than ever before. I think it's important to slow down a little bit and get in touch with ourselves - and our food. Even if you only have a goal to fix one meal a week, it's all about the baby steps. You have to start somewhere.
The great thing about this cookbook is the recipes are kid friendly and fun to make. I haven't tried one single recipe yet that I haven't liked. Some of them are a little time consuming, but what better way to spend that time than making homemade pop-tarts with your kids?
Check out this awesome cookbook. I promise you'll find some great treasures in it.
