While it is possible to burn more calories than you consume, you have to do an awful lot more exercise than most people realize to burn the amount of calories in a typical American diet. Calories add up fast! It's easy to down 1,000 calories in one sitting - the span of only a half an hour - but will take you hours of exercise to burn it off. Here is a rundown of some of our favorite foods, and what you would realistically have to do to burn that food off. You will probably be surprised.
That morning doughnut packs, on average, about 200 calories. To counter that you would have to go for a 2 mile run.
A McDonald's Big Mac carries a hefty 550 calories. Make that into a meal and you have a whopping 1350 calories! That means you would have to Jump Rope for a little over 2 Hours to burn that meal off!!
That morning Grande Caffe Mocha (one of the more popular drinks at Starbucks) is going to cost you 260 calories. That means you are going to have to hop on your bike and ride around for about 45 minutes, and you didn't even eat anything.
Jarod has everyone believing that Subway is the place to be if weight loss is the goal. I suppose it could be the case, if you ordered a small 6" sub, on whole wheat, with sliced turkey, veggies, and mustard only - NO mayo, NO salami, NO oil sauce. Most people don't order that way. My kids' favorite sub is the 6" Italian BMT which has 410 calories. You better get the mop and vacuum out, cause you will have to clean your house for 2 1/2 hours to make up for the calories in that one little sub that took you 10 minutes to eat.
Just one slice of a Little Caesars "Hot and Ready" pepperoni pizza will give you 280 calories..... but how many of us just eat one slice? For each slice you eat you would have to walk 3 miles. 4 slices - which would be half of your pizza (and I have known people to eat half a pizza easy) and you are out doing a half marathon to burn that baby off your mid-line.
The bottom line is, in order to keep your bottom line looking fit and healthy you have to be very aware of what you are putting into your mouth at all times. You can easily get yourself into a huge calorie surplus in a matter of minutes, that would take you hours to counter. I am not saying you cannot enjoy a fun meal now and again, just don't make a habit out of it every day, and make sure you budget for it. If you put it in there, you are going to have to burn it off.
