5 Ways To Stay Active Through The Winter

Baby it's cold outside! Living in Seattle we have pretty timid weather. It doesn't usually get unbearably cold here - but it gets really grey, dark and rainy, and that can be depressing - depressing is NOT motivating. Over New Years I was visiting family in Logan Utah. I decided to get up one morning and go for a run.... that's when it hit me what a lot of you suffer through in the winter time. This picture is what my weather app was telling me was going on outside. Um.... 1 degree? That's not going to happen. My lungs would be frozen before I hit the first marker. So I had to get creative and workout in the basement. The kids joined in, we had a great workout, and had a lot of fun. Don't let your workouts suffer in the winter. Here are 5 great ways to keep yourself active and in shape when the weather is less than desirable.

Body Weight Exercises

Too many people complicate exercise and feel like you have to belong to a gym or own a bunch of fancy expensive equipment to get a good workout. This is just not true: you can get an amazing workout with just your body. When I workout in my gym I have very simple equipment that gets the job done perfectly and I try to teach this philosophy to the people that I work with. You don't have to have a lot of space, or spend a ton of money to be in great shape.

Exercise Tips for People Who HATE Exercise! with Tony Horton

Tony Horton is the creator of the popular exercise program P90X. He was a guest speaker at the Longevity Now Conference in 2013 talking about the importance of exercise and how to get motivated, even if you hate exercise. I have a clip of that talk, it's less than 8 minutes, but very entertaining and informative. It doesn't matter if you are 110 pounds or 410 pounds, just do what you can do. "Stop focusing on what you can't do, and look at what you can do". You don't have to have fancy equipment, or belong to a gym to get started. Your own body weight and a small amount of space can take you a long way. Just find something you enjoy and do it.

Running Through Adversity

Kayla Montgomery is a runner on her High School Track team. She is ranked 21st in the country for the 3,200-Meter race and she won the Class 4A NCHSAA girls individual station championships in 2013. But what makes this Senior track star so amazing isn't her portfolio of race wins; in 2009, at just 14 years old, Kayla was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis.

You Are NEVER Too Old To Start

I hear quite often, from our more seasoned population, that they are too old to begin an exercise program, too old to participate in a particular activity, or too old to do the sports they once did as a kid. I would like to sit here and call BS on that! You may not move as fast, or be as limber, as you once were, but you can still move. As a matter of fact, moving is even more important as you age than when you were a youngster as it keeps you independent for a much longer time. Here are the benefits of exercise in our golden years.

10 Tips To Help You Love Exercising

Are you one of those people who the thought of exercise conjures up images of torture devises, pain and misery? If so, you're not alone. A lot of people don't exercise at all because they can't get past the thought of it: it's just a very undesirable activity for them and one they are not interested in participating in. However, regular exercise has been proven to lower many lifestyle diseases including cholesterol, heart disease, and diabetes. Seniors who exercise regularly are independent much longer in their life times and have fewer complications. We all know it's good for us, but how can we make such an undesirable act fun? Here are a few tips that will help with that and help you to love exercising.

Spokane Half Marathon - 5 Tips I Took Away to Share

Last weekend the hubby and I took off on a mini road trip to Spokane to run their Half Marathon. One of the things I love about running races outside of my own hometown is the chance to explore a new place. I love going somewhere I might not otherwise spend time in, and I am always amazed at the fun things we find - every town is so unique. Here are my thoughts on the Spokane Marathon along with some important tips I learned this time around.
